Shirley May Johnson

  Mrs. Shirley May Johnson, 90, passed away into the arms of her savior on February 16, 2019 at her home in Morris, IL.

 Funeral services will be held at 11 am Saturday, February 23, 2019 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Patrick
Lohse officiating. Visitation will start at 10:00 am with funeral immediately following at 11:00 am and burial at Saratoga

 Born in St. Joseph, MI on September 26, 1928, Shirley was the daughter of William and Irene (Jasper) Riley. She graduated
from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1947. She moved to Chicago, IL and worked as a telephone operator for Illinois Bell
Telephone Co. It was in Chicago that she met and subsequently married John O. Johnson on June 11, 1955 at St. Paul’s
Lutheran Church. They moved to Morris, John O. Johnson’s hometown, and raised their four children, Fred, Kathy, Mary, and
John. Shirley was a crossing guard for many years at the corner of Lisbon and High Streets. Shirley and John had a small
farm where they had 50 apple trees. Shirley loved to give away apples and apple cider, and enjoyed baking bread and
kringla for others. At the age of 68 she started nursing school and upon getting her degree, she practiced for over 10 years
at William W. Fox Illinois State Development Center. She later took care of her husband in the years before he went to the
Veterans’ Home in LaSalle, IL.

 Shirley was an encouraging and inspirational person who was an outspoken believer in Christ and enjoyed being with
people. She was a loving wife and mother and beloved grandmother and great grandmother. She was a member of
Bethlehem Lutheran Church for the last 48 years.

 Survivors include her four children, Fred (Kendra) Johnson, Kathy (Mike) July, Mary (Steve) Weber, and John Johnson who
took care of Shirley in her last years. She is also survived by one great grandchild and seven grandchildren whom she

 She was preceded in death by her husband, John O. Johnson, her parents, and two sisters. Memorials may be given to
Joliet Hospice, 250 Water Stone Circle, Joliet, IL 60431.
